Marble is not just any rock. It’s an ode to the passage of time, a story told through its dynamic veins, stunning backgrounds, and captivating gradients. Its beauty is subtle yet timeless. Marble holds a special place in the history of art and culture. The marble of Michelangelo and Donatello, its supple texture, flawless finish, and impeccable quality have assured its place in the Pantheon of great artistic mediums.

Carrara marble, an enduring legacy.

The stone gracing St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican and the Marble Arch in London can be found in luxury hotels and homes, used as flooring and stairs as well as surfaces for kitchens, bathrooms, and other spaces. Centuries of quarrying have created a distinctive landscape. From a distance, the pit mines appear covered in snow, even in the summer. Hundreds of active quarries and many more abandoned marble mines dot mountain ranges, reminders of man’s indelible touch on nature. The rugged landscape does not immediately come to mind when admiring marble. The many people who extract it are just as integral to its legacy as the artists who’ve sculpted with it and the architects who’ve erected monuments with it.

Therefore, it is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that Anatolia has acquired a series of four photographs by German photographer Tom Hegen that speak to this very legacy. Renowned for his captivating aerial photographs, Hegen’s work explores the places where the boundary and delicate relationship between man and nature becomes visible. Often employing dramatic and abstract perspectives, his photos seek to capture the bigger picture of our relationship with the planet to make both our footprint and our impact more tangible. “The Marble Series” was shot in 2016 on a wonderous trip. The four pictures capture the landscapes carved by man, tracing precisely etched contours. Beauty coexists in both the natural and the man-made.
